Meta is rumored to be working on Llama 3, aiming to compete with GPT-4 while keeping it largely available under the Llama license.

OpenAl engineer Jason Wei suggests that Meta has the computational capacity to train Llama 3 to GPT-4’s performance level and even train Llama 4.

• Despite Wei’s credibility, the accuracy of these statements remains uncertain, as official confirmation regarding the release of Llama 3 is still pending.

• Transitioning from Llama 2 to Llama 3 might be challenging, as GPT-4 employs a more complex mixture-of-experts architecture with 16 networks and billions of parameters.

• While Llama 2 shows promise and fine-tuning capabilities, there’s still a performance gap compared to closed-source models like GPT-4 and Google’s PaLM-2, according to Meta’s own paper.
